Printing on Vellum What You Need to Know

Printing on vellum for your handmade wedding invitations is a bit more difficult than printing on normal paper, it has different thicknesses, a different texture, and absorbs much more ink.

But using vellum paper gives your handmade wedding invites a professional look which is extremely simple to create.

There are just a few things to remember when printing on vellum paper.

Not all vellum paper has the same transparency or thickness, so it you want a very sheer look go for a vellum paper which has a gsm of 80 or below. Vellum paper with a gsm of 100 or above might look more like card if it's placed over something else.

Feel both sides of your vellum paper as one side may be rougher than the other. It is the rough side that is best for printing on. If you are using an inject printer and try to print on the shinier side of the vellum paper, there's a chance that the ink will not dry properly and bead up, ruining the design. If boths sides are the same, then start with on side and experiment.

Changing your printer setting to transpacy within the paper type section of your printer properties will reduce the ink laid onto the vellum, this has a twofold benefit of reducing drying time and blotting.·

The final stage is the most important and most time consuming. You need to let the ink dry on the vellum paper before moving it. The ink does take longer to dry and there's nothing worse than having to print the vellum paper again because you were too impaitent.· You will probably need to wait around 15 minutes for the ink to be dry completely. But you can always give it a gentle blasting with a hair dryer on a low setting.

Trial and error is the key when printing onto vellum paper
